Indoor or outdoor mushroom growing?
Choose a project for the conditions you have, then choose the species and format to match.
An indoor kit is a contained project
An indoor kit can suit someone who wants a defined starting point and product-specific instructions. Check the space it needs, the growing conditions and how regularly it needs attention. Indoor does not mean every room or cupboard will be suitable.
Outdoor projects need a different plan
The RHS's outdoor mushroom guide discusses suitable species and growing materials for outdoor projects. A log or bed project should be selected for its intended setting and local conditions. Read the species and material requirements before buying spawn or dowels, and plan for the relevant growing season.
Allow for a different pace
Compare the supplier's dispatch and growing guidance for the exact product. Dispatch time, time to establish and time to harvest are different things. Weather and growing conditions can affect an outdoor project, so avoid choosing solely around a fixed harvest date.
Keep the choice clear
For a first purchase, write down whether you want a prepared indoor kit or a project involving your own materials. Then check what is included, what you must supply and whether the format is available now or offered as a pre-order. Canopy keeps those distinctions on the selected format.
